Copa Paulino Alcantara final is anyone’s match to win.

October 27, 2018

After a long season, 30 matches played, it all comes to one final game-the Copa Paulino Alcantara final. With both sides heading into the ball game with equally 11 games unbeaten runs, Davao Aguilas Bellmare FC and Kaya-Iloilo FC will be looking to bring the 2nd piece of silverware for this season home. One team will be looking to end the other team’s streak and lift the trophy while the other will do its best to keep two hands on the silverware but will definitely slip out of their reach after the match. The match will be played at Rizal Memorial Stadium at 5pm. Two of the most in-form teams will be showcasing their own style of football and hoping to make their home-Davao and Iloilo, proud. With a slot to the AFC 2019 up for grabs, it’s anyone’s ball game and it will be an exciting match of football on a Saturday afternoon to end the season.

“I’m very very proud for Davao to be one of the two teams to contest for the first ever cup final is an exciting event for the club. To be honest, this is where we expected to be. The target when I was first appointed was to get into the cup final” said Coach Leigh.

“If you look at the players that will be on show, Mendy is having a fantastic season scoring-wise. They’ve got Tanton’s strength. For us, we have some of the best players in the country. Kim scored 4 in the semis, Mendy scored a hat-trick. If you’re a fan of football, I think you’ll see a really attractive attacking game of football. Both teams will be trying to show that they deserve to be representing the Philippines in the AFC and the Champions of the cup. I’m very excited about going into this game and letting people see the new Davao and how we’ve build up in the last 4-5 months and our style of football” added the assistant coach from Scotland.

Just to mention, both teams have not played each other since June and the streaks for either teams began after the 5 meetings so the final will be an exciting one as either teams will look to showcase their best 18 and prove the the Filipinos why they are deserving to win the AFC slot. But on paper, Kaya have won 3 times against Davao, drew once and lost once. Many will consider that Kaya will be the favorites on that note but in recent events, Davao has been scoring many goals per game. Not to mention, Kim scored 6 goals in his last 2 games for Davao and these 2 games were against opponents that Kaya struggled to score many against. The final will be back to 0-0 and it’s anyone’s ball game. Whoever is hungrier to win will lift the trophy.

“I’ve been disappointed that I’ve never played in the AFC in the club level. It would be a great team achievement and also an individual achievement” said Phil Younghusband, captain of Davao Aguilas Bellmare FC.

Phil has never played in the AFC and never got the opportunity to represent the Philippines in club level despite holding the record for most goals for his country of 51 goals and 99 appearances for the Philippines Azkals.

Although Davao Aguilas Bellmare FC is a very young club and only in their 2nd year of operation, the club has changed and grown drastically. Signing some of the biggest names in the country and with an experienced Coach Leigh Manson, the club will be in good hands during the finals.
