Aguilas Supporters Wednesday – A Journey to an Ethnic Tribe in Davao

October 14, 2018

Apo Bahani top lad Paul Vinsly Casiple Narido ventured to indigenous tribe in Mindanao called “Lumads”. It was an adventure of a lifetime that mainly proclaimed his passion for the club and a significant journey to the epicentre of cultural tribes in Mindanao.

The Lumads are a group of non-Muslim indigenous people in the southern Philippines. It is a Cebuano term meaning “native”.

It’s truly important to acknowledge the different tribes and honour their cultural heritage.
Paul Vinsly was convinced after all about such encounter with local tribes and had an urge to simply share his passion for football and indeed Davao Aguilas Bellmare FC.

Here’s the story:

We visited the mountains of Malabog, Davao City. I saw the Lumads in the streets selling some handcrafted bracelets. I had a deal before buying some, they have to listen to my discussion and answer the questions after.

Then I started talking about football. I taught them how it is played. Then, I introduced DABFC (Davao Aguilas Bellmare FC), our team, their team.

After which, I started asking questions like a quiz in the school. I buy 1 bracelet for every correct answer.
Some of the questions I asked were:
1. What is the name of our football team?
2. What is the name of our Ultras?
3. Who is our team captain?
4. Who is our rival club?

I was so happy leaving their community because some of them went shouting “SUKOL AGUILAS” while I watched them at the window of our car.

DABFC supporter Paul Vinsly Casiple Narido initiatives are remarkable and inspirational in honouring the indigenous tribe by his immersion to the culture and partly initiate a conversation that will change the way they perceive football. It won’t be the last journey but a start towards the immersion of cultural tribe like Lumads to understand the beautiful game.

A definite purpose and a platform for community to embrace the sports.
