Goalless draw enough for Davao Aguilas and Stallion Laguna to qualify for knockout stages.
September 27, 2018
Davao Aguilas Bellmare FC and Stallion Laguna FC both battled it out last Wednesday, September 26 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium for what could’ve been a game to decide who would end on top of the group. However, Davao was not able to convert their chances so did Stallion, settling for a point apiece heading into the last match of the group stages on October 17 in Binan Laguna.
The first half belonged to Stallion Laguna as they had most of the chances threatening Deyto and disrupting his back line. Davao’s goalkeeper, Deyto, was in great form as he saved Davao’s hopes of finishing the group strong with another clean sheet. Deyto was also awarded the man of the match award where we saw him perform numerous saves in 1v1 situations. When everyone thought that it was a goal, Deyto was there to deny and prove everyone wrong.
An early substitution in the 12th minute for Coach Nierras was forced to be made as his son, Matthew Nierras, suffered a knee injury during a tough battle with Matthew Hartmann by the baseline, who went on to be replaced by Reginald Villareal in the CB position.
Despite the attempts of Melliza and Sy at goal, Davao stood fast and firm as the backline blocked and defended all the danger balls in the box. Davao was able to keep it at 0-0 as crucial saves by Deyto prevented Stallion from taking the game.
For the rest of the game, Davao had some counter-attacks that led to attempts on goal but no real shot threatened the goalkeeper of Stallion, Rosalia Jr., as the whole squad from Laguna was able to work together defensively, seeing almost everyone except the striker in the defensive half. Davao did see the ball hit the post in the 82nd minute with Hartmann’s attempt but Stallion was lucky enough that there was no one on the other end to rebound the ball and take a shot.
Davao will look to finish the group stages strong with a confident win against Stallion in Binan, where they have gotten positive results at home, despite already qualifying for the semi-finals. Ceres Negros is officially out of the cup and will be having an early break before the next season begins.
