Pre-match Presscon Article for Ceres v Davao in Copa Paulino Alcantara

August 29, 2018

In just 2 days, the league cup of the Philippines, also known as Copa Paulino Alcantara, will kick-off with 2 games to be played at Rizal Memorial Stadium, Manila. First, a match at 4pm between Kaya Iloilo and Global Cebu. Group B’s early kickoff will spark the cup’s first ever match and this will surely be exciting as Kaya would want to get a favorable result out of this game as they continue to strive for Asian Football Confederation Cup (AFC Cup) qualification since finishing 2nd in the league this season. On the other hand, a 7pm match between Ceres Negros and Davao Aguilas will be played as the defending back-to-back champions will look to fend off Davao’s new and fearless squad by hoping to deny them from going through the group stages to prevent the Mindanao-based club from qualifying for the AFC cup next year. Davao will surely give their all as this is their main objective of the season after all. The goal is still there and the chances are still high so Davao will definitely want to try to secure a cup-birth by winning the domestic league cup.

“I’m always confident before a game. Against Ceres, we need to be at our best and that’s how we want our games - always a chance to improve. Our injuries have hit us as 7 players at the moment are currently out, which means we have chances for our other players to show what they can bring to the team.” said Assistant Coach Leigh Manson when he was asked how his team is feeling going into the cup and their chances of winning the cup.

“The team and I are confident going into every game with the squad we have and I see the change in now having no fear towards anyone. I feel the game a few weeks ago is the past now and should be forgotten as we have a chance now to prove that we should be beating these teams on a regular basis and push together towards our goal for AFC Cup and Ceres are just another team in our way.” added Adam Tull as he responds to the questions on how he feels about the team’s chances and making an impact in Saturday’s match against a top-side like Ceres Negros.

Saturday will surely be a great game to watch as Ceres and Davao have had a history especially between the ultras and fans getting involved with the action. A great rivalry could soon be seen as both clubs seem to be the favorites to win this Copa Paulino Alcantara. Davao will do everything they can to prevent Ceres from winning this cup to avoid letting Kaya qualify for the AFC as 2nd-seed in the league table, which is the easy path for Kaya.

We hope to see you at our games as we will need all the support from our Aguilas Supporters for this cup as we look to bring the cup trophy home and clinch a AFC birth. Kick off is at 7pm this Saturday at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
