JPV Marikina dominated and humbled by offensive Davao Aguilas

July 27, 2018

Last Wednesday, July 25, JPV Marikina faced Davao Aguilas at the PFF National Training Center at Carmona, Cavite due to JPV not being able to play at their home ground, Marikina Sports Complex. Davao played with their captain, Phil Younghusband, back in the starting lineup. Although their leader was back in action, they only had 17 fit and eligible players that consisted of 2 goalkeepers and 4 defenders on the bench. Now, that doesn’t seem like a full squad is it, nor a bunch of attacking options should the need arise. Despite the challenge, Davao was able to dominate and control much of the game as they went on to win 3-0 as Captain Phil Younghusband, Kim Sungmin and new signing, Paolo Salenga, have all been registered on the score sheet. The three attackers proved to be enough for Davao to secure the 3 points that they needed to keep the pressure on Kaya thus, the hopes of finishing 2nd in the league.

It wasn’t long before the floodgates have opened as Kim scored the first goal of the match in just 12 minutes. Despite the early lead, Davao did not slow down as they kept their foot on the gas pedal as they continued to attack and play their possession in the opponent’s final third. JPV did have some chances as they proved to hold the possession for some time against Davao too, but it wasn’t enough as the Mindanao-based club were too hungry for more goals, so it seems. The match ended 1-0 at half time as Coach Melchor’s men headed into the locker room to sort things out in the attack.

As the second half resumed, it seemed that Coach Melchor’s men had control of the driver’s seat as they were able to win most of the duels in midfield against JPV. It seemed that De Jong and Villanueva proved to be having a good partnership in the middle as they played hard and rough to win many duels.

The Aguilas didn’t wait long as the second goal of the match came from their captain, Phil Younghusband, who was out during their last match against Global that ended as a draw. Phil powered through as he had a breakaway and slotted the ball in the back of the net to get back on the scoring sheet.

What no one expected is when Salenga was able to make the scoreline 3-0 after 65 minutes that proved to be the finisher to JPV’s hopes of getting back in the game. It was a total domination as Aguilas soared high in the second half to get the 3 points. Salenga, who scored his 2nd goal for his new club, also made the same number of appearances for Davao. He is now 2 of 2 since arriving from Global Cebu during the transfer window. He is proving to be a great signing and still has a lot to give as he is only 24 years old. This kid has a lot to offer to Davao, so to speak.

In the end, Davao enjoyed a big away win as JPV ended up goalless against Davao’s other recent new signing, Deyto, who received his first clean sheet for his new club, who also arrived from Global Cebu just like Salenga.

The result keeps Davao in third place with 28 points, adding some cushion to their small lead over Stallion Laguna, who they will face this weekend, July 28, Saturday, at Binan Football Stadium.
