Davao’s new signings not enough to get the 3 points they badly need as revamped Global spoils the Mindanao-based side’s chances settling with a draw.
The transfer window just opened last Sunday, July 15, as teams hope to rejuvenate their squads to finish the season strong.
Davao and Global looked to have new faces, noticeably 4 former Global players moving to the Mindanao-based squad. The match was set to be a good one, since it’s always exciting to see players play against their old squad. Not to mention, Davao already snapped up some former Global players in the transfer window before the start of the season.
Global Cebu started the match very strong and seemed more likely to score first in the game as Davao Aguilas were still adjusting with their chemistry in the first few minutes, so it seems, with new signings Deyto and Dos Santos starting the match against their old club. It was Darryl Roberts of Global Cebu that sparked the first goal of the match to draw first blood as he receives a beautifully weighted through ball from Marvin Angeles down the middle between 2 Davao defenders. He then was able to finish the ball off against Patrick Deyto, who used to be the captain for the Cebu-based squad.
Global almost doubled their lead as Roberts was once again gifted an opportunity as Davao’s defense was too high, leaving space for Roberts and Global to work with. On the positive note, Grommen and Dos Santos were able to bounce back by recovering the lost space and positioning themselves perfectly so as not to give Roberts an easy time in offense.
Global faced a good counter-attack from Davao as Brad McDonald was able to quickly attack the left flank from an interception in their own half as he makes a quick early cross to Dylan De Bruycker who ends up getting a clear shot on goal, but was not enough as it went down the middle for Badelic to catch and kill the momentum.
However, in the 2nd half, Davao took control of the game with the possession going in their favour as Davao continued to look for that equalizing goal. In the 66th minute, Badelic was able to save a headed shot on goal from Davao. The momentum of the game was in favor to Davao now.
In the 88th minute, Davao had the chance once again to equalize from a cross by Hartmann to Matas who hits the post with a headed shot on goal. Global scrambled and panicked as a rebound came from that possession, but was able to clear it off the line as De Jong tries to put it in the back of the net.
In the 90th minute, Davao had another chance to equalize as substitute, Salenga, also a new signining and former player of Global, attempts a bicycle kick in the middle of the box as the match heats up between the 2 sides, only to be saved by Badelic once again.
In the final moments of the game, Salenga was able to finally score his debut goal for Davao as he slots in a lose ball just inside the box at 94 minutes. He blasts a rebounded shot off a Matt Hartmann cross and earns his side a point as a consolation.
This match was certainly something to look out for in the upcoming games for both sides. New signings definitely made an impact in favour of Davao, although the Younghusband brothers were not seen in action, due to injuries and illnesses.
The Aguilas are set to play JPV Marikina at the PFF National Training Center this Sunday as Coach Anzures and Manson look to make some changes and try to get the full 3 points from that game.
